Kauri's. Forests of these enormous trees used to cover much of the north island but over 97% of them quickly got cut down once europeans arrived..

Tane Mahuta - "God of the Forest". The tallest Kauri tree left standing - 51.5 meter tall and 13.8 meters in girth. About 1500 years old.

Te Matua Ngahere - "Father of the Forest". 16.4 meter girth (=over five meter in diameter!) and 29.9 meter tall. The tree is over 2000 years old.
